Have a taste of a Medieval Christmas! ‘The Medieval Christmas’ including taste samples
Join us at The Old King’s Head to learn all about celebrations, customs and traditions of the Medieval Christmas; from fasting to carolling, to banquets and dancing during this live talk and demonstration. You will discover all about etiquette and manners as well as what Christmas foods they enjoyed during the celebration.
There will also be a table top display of high-status glassware, pewter as a high-status table setting plus some of the more unusual kitchen equipment from a Medieval Christmas.
Each person will be able to try a range of homemade medieval samples including:
Hot medieval mulled wine ‘ Hippocras’ – a version called ‘piment’ – a honeyed spiced wine
Almond cakes – little cakes made with honey and almonds
Jusselle Dates – dates filled with cream cheese and other delights
Urchins – little hedgehogs made with pork, ginger and almonds
Pypes – the medieval version of cheese straws.
Gyngerbrede – the medieval version of gingerbread
Marchpane – made into all sorts of shapes, animals, figurines – often served gilded – like a marzipan.
